Shai Hope Powers West Indies to Historic 250-Run Chase Against India

RANCHI, October 9: Captain Shai Hope produced a sensational unbeaten century as the West Indies pulled off a historic run chase to defeat India by six wickets in the second T20 International at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Friday. Chasing a formidable target of 250, the visitors reached 252/4 in just 18.3 overs to register their highest successful run chase in T20I cricket and level the five-match series 1-1.
Hope's magnificent 102 not out off just 45 deliveries, combined with Sherfane Rutherford's explosive 84 off 37 balls, powered the Caribbean side to a remarkable victory that left the Indian bowlers struggling for answers. The successful chase ranks as the second-highest in men's T20I history, behind South Africa's pursuit of 259 against the West Indies in 2023.
India Post Mammoth Total After Batting Fireworks
After winning the toss and electing to field, the West Indies faced an imposing challenge as India piled up 249/5 in their allotted 20 overs.
Sanju Samson led India's batting charge with a blistering 82 off 41 balls, striking nine fours and four sixes. Ishan Kishan provided valuable support with 43 off 22 deliveries as India raced to a strong position during the middle overs.

Despite losing wickets in the latter stages, India recovered through an aggressive partnership between Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma. Iyer smashed 40 off 18 balls, while Tilak remained unbeaten on 44 off just 18 deliveries. Their explosive 83-run stand propelled India to a massive total and appeared to give the hosts a commanding advantage.
For the West Indies, Roston Chase was the standout bowler, claiming three wickets to restrict India's progress during the middle overs.
Mayank Yadav Strikes Early in West Indies Chase
The West Indies could hardly have made a more difficult start to their pursuit of 250. India's pace sensation Mayank Yadav dismissed Kamil Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer off consecutive deliveries in the opening over, reducing the visitors to 5/2.

Captain Hope, however, refused to panic. He continued to find boundaries and kept the required run rate within reach as the visitors attempted to recover from the early setbacks.
Rovman Powell added a quickfire 24 off 13 balls, helping the West Indies accelerate during the powerplay. Although Mayank returned to dismiss Powell, the early breakthroughs failed to derail the visitors' momentum.
Hope and Rutherford Turn the Match Around
The turning point arrived when Hope joined Rutherford at the crease. The pair launched a devastating counterattack, taking on India's pace bowlers and spinners with an extraordinary display of power hitting.
Hope combined composure with aggressive stroke play, while Rutherford attacked relentlessly from the other end. Their 120-run partnership for the fourth wicket came off just 54 deliveries, transforming a challenging chase into a realistic victory opportunity.

Rutherford smashed seven fours and seven sixes in his 84-run knock before Kuldeep Yadav finally broke the partnership. By then, however, the damage had been done, and India were struggling to contain the visitors.
Hope remained unbeaten, bringing up his century in just 45 balls. His innings featured six fours and nine sixes, showcasing his ability to combine calculated batting with explosive acceleration.
West Indies Make History
The victory marked the West Indies' highest successful run chase in men's T20I cricket, surpassing their previous best of 231 against South Africa in 2015. It also underlined the team's remarkable batting depth and resilience under pressure.
Hope was named Player of the Match for his outstanding century, while Rutherford's blistering contribution proved equally decisive in shifting the contest away from India.
With the five-match series now level at 1-1, both teams will turn their attention to the third T20I in Indore on October 11. India will look to bounce back, while the West Indies will aim to carry their momentum forward after producing one of the most memorable chases in their T20I history.
