Australia A Clinch Series with 69-Run Win Over India A, Take 2-0 Lead

Puducherry, October 9: Australia A secured the three-match one-day series against India A with a convincing 69-run victory in the second match at the Cricket Association Puducherry Siechem Ground on Friday. Half-centuries from Sam Konstas and Josh Philippe, followed by a decisive three-wicket spell from Spencer Johnson, helped the visitors take an unassailable 2-0 lead with one match remaining.
Australia A posted 275 all out in 49.5 overs before bowling India A out for 206 in 45.2 overs. Despite a fighting 67 from Rajat Patidar, the hosts failed to mount a successful chase after losing three key wickets inside the first nine overs.
Konstas and Philippe Lay the Foundation
After opting to bat, Australia A received valuable contributions from their top and middle order. Sam Konstas anchored the innings with 67 off 88 deliveries, while wicketkeeper-batter Josh Philippe scored a fluent 58 off 58 balls.
The pair added 101 runs for the second wicket, giving Australia A a solid platform. Philippe played with positive intent, finding the boundaries regularly, while Konstas built his innings patiently and reached his half-century before departing.
India A fought back in the latter stages, restricting Australia A to 107 runs in the final 20 overs while claiming the remaining seven wickets. Arshad Khan led the home side's bowling attack with three wickets for 56 runs, while Yash Thakur picked up two wickets for 46.
Australia A eventually finished with 275, setting India A a target of 276 for victory.
Johnson's Early Strikes Derail India A
India A's chase got off to a disappointing start as Australia's pace attack exploited the conditions to generate bounce and movement. Devdutt Padikkal, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and B Sai Sudharsan departed early, leaving the hosts struggling at 30 for three in the ninth over.
Left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson was the standout performer with the ball, finishing with figures of three wickets for 35 runs. He removed key batters, including Padikkal and Patidar, to ensure Australia A maintained control of the contest.
Riley Meredith also played an important role, claiming two wickets for 31 runs as Australia's fast bowlers consistently troubled the Indian batters.
Patidar's Fighting Fifty Goes in Vain
Rajat Patidar emerged as India's leading batter, scoring 67 off 82 balls in a determined effort to revive the innings. He attempted to stabilise the chase after the early setbacks but received insufficient support from the other end.
Nishant Sindhu joined Patidar in a fifth-wicket partnership worth 51 runs, offering India A a brief opportunity to recover. However, regular wickets prevented the hosts from building a match-changing stand.
Anukul Roy remained unbeaten on 34, but his contribution came too late to alter the outcome. Once Patidar was dismissed by Johnson, India's hopes of chasing down the target faded, and the innings ended at 206 in 45.2 overs.
Australia A Seal the Series
The 69-run victory gave Australia A an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, confirming their series triumph with one game still to play. Their balanced performance with both bat and ball proved decisive, with Konstas and Philippe providing the batting foundation before Johnson and the pace attack dismantled India's chase.
For India A, the consecutive failures of top-order batters Padikkal, Gaikwad and Sudharsan will be a concern heading into the final match. The hosts will look to improve their batting performance and finish the series on a positive note.
The third and final one-day match is scheduled for Sunday, October 11, with Australia A aiming to complete a clean sweep and India A seeking a consolation victory.
