Indian captain Shreyas Iyer produced a breathtaking batting masterclass on Tuesday, October 6, smashing a sensational century to guide India to an emphatic eight-wicket victory over West Indies at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

Chasing the target with confidence, India reached the finish line with 32 balls to spare, taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20I series. Iyer’s unbeaten 43-ball 101 was the defining moment of a contest that saw the right-hander etch his name into several record books.

Iyer Delivers Under Pressure

Iyer walked into the middle with India needing to build a strong chase, but what followed was an exhibition of clean hitting and remarkable composure. The 31-year-old accelerated rapidly and brought up his century from just 42 deliveries.

His unbeaten 101 ensured there was little drama in the closing stages, with India completing the chase comfortably and putting the West Indies attack under sustained pressure.

The innings was particularly significant because it marked Iyer’s first T20I century for India. It was also his first international hundred as captain, making the achievement even more special.

A Special Venue for Iyer

Interestingly, the Ekana Cricket Stadium has now become a memorable venue in Iyer's career.

Earlier this year, the Punjab Kings captain registered his maiden IPL century at the same ground against Lucknow Super Giants. Several months later, he returned to the venue and produced another spectacular hundred—this time in India's colours.

The Lucknow stadium has therefore witnessed two important milestones in Iyer's career, both involving centuries.

India Make a Flying Start to the Series

The victory was also notable because India had barely 48 hours to recover from their Asian Games campaign in Japan, where the Men in Blue secured the gold medal after defeating Pakistan.

Despite the short turnaround, India showed no signs of fatigue. The hosts were sharp with the bat and clinical in the chase, eventually wrapping up the match with more than five overs still remaining.

The result gave India an early advantage in the five-match series and provided their captain with the perfect start to his tenure.

Iyer Announces Himself as Captain

While Iyer's leadership will be judged over the course of the series, his individual performance could hardly have been more impressive.

Scoring an unbeaten century while leading India is a statement of intent. More importantly, the manner in which he paced his innings demonstrated his ability to combine responsibility with aggression—an essential quality in T20 cricket.

With his first T20I century now under his belt, Iyer will be eager to build on this performance as India look to strengthen their position in the series.

For the West Indies, however, the defeat exposed the difficulty of containing India's batting lineup on a good surface. With Iyer leading the charge, the hosts turned what could have been a competitive chase into a one-sided affair.
