The SA20 Auction 2026 delivered an exciting mix of experienced international stars, established South African cricketers and promising young talent as franchises completed their squads for the fifth season of South Africa’s premier T20 league. Held in Johannesburg on October 7, the auction saw four teams compete for the remaining squad positions ahead of the 2027 season.

A total of 156 players were shortlisted from 789 registrations, including 95 South African cricketers and 61 overseas players. With only 19 slots available across four franchises, teams had to make strategic decisions to strengthen their combinations while managing their remaining budgets.

Jason Rowles Emerges as the Biggest Buy

One of the biggest talking points of the auction was the signing of 18-year-old Jason Rowles by Joburg Super Kings for R2.9 million, making him the most expensive player sold at the event. His price tag highlighted the franchises’ willingness to invest in emerging talent alongside established international performers.

Joburg Super Kings also secured former South African captain Faf du Plessis for R2.7 million. The experienced batter will return to the Wanderers-based franchise, bringing leadership, top-order batting quality and considerable T20 experience to the squad.

Another notable acquisition for Joburg was West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard, who was purchased for R1.5 million. His explosive hitting and experience in franchise cricket could prove valuable as the team looks to build a formidable middle order.

These signings made Joburg Super Kings one of the major talking points of the auction.

MI Cape Town Strengthen Their Squad

MI Cape Town made several important additions, with South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder attracting a price of R2.6 million. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball offers the franchise flexibility across different match situations.

The Cape Town-based side also signed West Indies batter Shimron Hetmyer for R1.5 million and New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult for the same amount. Hetmyer's aggressive batting can add firepower to the middle order, while Boult brings new-ball expertise and the ability to take wickets early in an innings.

With these acquisitions, MI Cape Town added a combination of international experience and all-round capability to their existing squad.

Pretoria Capitals Add Experience and Young Talent

Pretoria Capitals focused on strengthening their squad with a combination of established South African names and emerging players.

Former South African captain Temba Bavuma was signed for R200,000, while experienced batter Rassie van der Dussen joined the franchise for R500,000. Their experience could help provide stability in the batting department.

The Capitals also recruited young players Josh Breed and Ackeem Auguste for R200,000 each, while West Indies all-rounder Keemo Paul joined at the same price. These additions give the franchise more options as it prepares for the demands of another competitive SA20 campaign.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape Bring in Pace Reinforcements

Sunrisers Eastern Cape strengthened their bowling resources by signing England all-rounder Craig Overton for R1.5 million. The franchise also acquired South African fast bowler Nandre Burger for R500,000.

Both players offer pace-bowling options, with Overton providing an additional contribution with the bat. Burger's ability to generate speed and movement could make him an important option in the powerplay and middle overs.

For a franchise that has enjoyed considerable success in the competition, these signings represent an effort to maintain a competitive balance ahead of the new season.
