Hasan Mahmud Makes History with Bangladesh’s First-Ever Test Hat-Trick by a Pacer

Abu Dhabi, October 11, 2026: Bangladesh fast bowler Hasan Mahmud created history by becoming the first Bangladeshi fast bowler to take a hat-trick in Test cricket during the one-off Test against Afghanistan at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. His remarkable three-wicket burst on the third day helped Bangladesh take control of the match.
The 26-year-old right-arm pacer dismissed Ismat Alam, Qais Ahmad and Zia-ur-Rehman on three consecutive deliveries in the 83rd over of Afghanistan’s first innings. With this achievement, Mahmud became only the third Bangladeshi bowler to claim a Test hat-trick, joining Alok Kapali and Sohag Gazi in the record books.
How Hasan Mahmud Completed His Historic Hat-Trick
Mahmud began his memorable spell by bowling Ismat Alam for one run with a delivery that moved back into the batter and passed beneath his bat to hit the stumps.
On the next ball, Mahmud found the outside edge of Qais Ahmad’s bat. Bangladesh wicketkeeper Litton Das took a sharp diving catch to dismiss the Afghan batter and bring the bowler within one wicket of a hat-trick.

The historic moment arrived when Mahmud trapped Zia-ur-Rehman leg before wicket (LBW) with the next delivery. Although the on-field umpire initially turned down the appeal, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and wicketkeeper Litton Das encouraged a review. Ball-tracking technology confirmed that the ball would have hit the stumps, overturning the decision and completing the hat-trick.
The three consecutive dismissals dealt a significant blow to Afghanistan’s innings and left the home side struggling at 220 for eight.
Third Bangladeshi Bowler to Achieve the Feat
Before Mahmud, only two Bangladesh bowlers had recorded Test hat-tricks.
Alok Kapali became the first Bangladeshi to achieve the feat against Pakistan in Peshawar in 2003. A decade later, off-spinner Sohag Gazi took Bangladesh’s second Test hat-trick against New Zealand in Chattogram in 2013.

Both previous achievements came from spin bowlers, making Mahmud’s accomplishment particularly significant. His hat-trick marked a new milestone for Bangladesh’s pace-bowling history and ended a 13-year wait for another Bangladeshi Test hat-trick.
Mahmud’s Five-Wicket Haul Puts Bangladesh in Command
Mahmud’s hat-trick was part of an outstanding bowling performance against Afghanistan. Bangladesh had scored 346 runs in their first innings, with half-centuries from Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Shadman Islam and Litton Das.
In reply, Afghanistan were bowled out for 240, giving Bangladesh a first-innings lead of 106 runs. Mahmud finished with figures of five wickets for 55 runs from 21 overs, while fellow fast bowler Ebadot Hossain claimed three wickets for 52 runs. Afghanistan’s resistance was led by Rahmat Shah, who scored 86 runs.
Mahmud’s ability to exploit the movement and variable bounce on offer proved crucial in dismantling Afghanistan’s batting order. His performance reinforced Bangladesh’s position in the match and demonstrated the impact of their pace attack.
A Historic Moment for Bangladesh Cricket
Hasan Mahmud’s achievement represents a significant milestone for Bangladesh cricket. While Alok Kapali and Sohag Gazi had previously taken Test hat-tricks, Mahmud became the first fast bowler from the country to accomplish the feat.
His performance in Abu Dhabi combined individual excellence with a crucial contribution to Bangladesh’s position in the match. By dismissing three batters in consecutive deliveries and finishing with a five-wicket haul, Mahmud delivered a memorable performance on the international stage.
