Cape Town, October 27, 2026: Australia’s batting mainstay Steve Smith underwent a fitness test ahead of the decisive third Test against South Africa at Newlands, with a persistent neck injury casting doubt over his availability for the series finale. The five-day match is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 27, with the series tied at 1-1.

Smith experienced neck discomfort during Australia’s defeat in the second Test at Gqeberha, where South Africa secured an innings-and-31-run victory to level the series. The veteran batter’s fitness has since become a major concern for Australia as captain Pat Cummins and the team management weigh their final selection options.

During the team’s final training session at Newlands, Smith spent around 35 minutes batting in the nets. Although he played a range of shots, he was seen stretching and moving his neck, suggesting that the issue was still troubling him.

Cummins Backs Experienced Batter

Australia captain Pat Cummins expressed hope that Smith would be available for the series decider, while acknowledging that the batter might not be completely fit.

“Hopefully, it all goes well and he’ll be there,” Cummins said, adding that the team wanted to wait until the final assessment before confirming its playing XI.

Cummins also highlighted Smith’s importance to the side, describing him as one of Australia’s greatest batters. He backed the experienced right-hander to manage the discomfort and contribute to the team even if he was not at full fitness.

Smith has endured a difficult tour with the bat, scoring 25, 27, 28 and 3 across his four innings in the first two Tests. He also took a blow to the head during the opening Test, adding to his physical challenges on the tour.

Despite the modest returns, Cummins remained confident in Smith’s ability and commitment, noting that the batter had appeared in control of his game during parts of the series.

Australia Consider Changes to Batting Order

Smith’s fitness is not the only selection issue facing Australia ahead of the crucial encounter. Nic Maddinson and reserve wicketkeeper Sam Harper have been released from the touring squad to return to domestic Sheffield Shield cricket.

Maddinson struggled to make a significant impact after his recall, recording scores of 0, 48, 0 and 8 across his four innings. His departure opens the door for Matt Renshaw to partner Travis Head at the top of the order.

Meanwhile, Cameron Green and Josh Inglis are available again after recovering from their respective injuries. Green is expected to bat in the middle order, potentially helping Australia strengthen its lineup for the series decider.

If Smith is unable to take the field, Marnus Labuschagne could retain his place in the team as Australia reassesses its batting combination.

Newlands Set for a High-Stakes Finale

The third Test carries significant importance for both teams, with Australia having won the opening match by 214 runs before South Africa responded emphatically in Gqeberha.

Smith’s potential return to Newlands also carries historical significance. The venue was the setting for the 2018 ball-tampering scandal that led to the end of his tenure as Australia’s captain at the time.

For now, Australia’s immediate priority is to establish whether its experienced batter can withstand the demands of a decisive Test. His availability could prove crucial as the visitors look to reclaim the series lead and South Africa aim to finish the contest with a victory on home soil.
