New Zealand Cricket will trial a single-ball system during the opening five rounds of the 2026–27 Ford Trophy, bringing the focus back to reverse swing and challenging batters to rethink their approach in the closing overs.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has revived the single-ball rule for a trial in its domestic men's one-day competition, The Ford Trophy, as part of preparations for the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. The tournament begins on October 28, 2026, with teams set to play under revised conditions designed to test the impact of using one ball throughout an innings.

Under the trial, teams will use a single ball for all 50 overs instead of the existing system of two new balls per innings, with the second ball introduced after 35 overs. The change is expected to give bowlers more opportunities to generate reverse swing during the death overs, potentially making it harder for batters to accelerate towards the end of an innings.

The Ford Trophy 2026–27 schedule

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has announced a 10-round league stage, followed by the elimination final and grand final. The opening round begins on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, with the Wellington–Otago match postponed by one day to Thursday, October 29.

Will Young Welcomes the Single-Ball Experiment

Central Stags batter and New Zealand international Will Young has welcomed the initiative, highlighting the tactical challenge that an older ball could create for batters in the closing stages of a one-day match.

Young said the proposed conditions reminded him of watching older international cricket highlights, when a softer ball could generate reverse swing and make scoring considerably more difficult in the final 10 to 15 overs.

Why NZC Is Testing the Rule

The trial comes with the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup approaching. South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe are scheduled to host the tournament in October and November next year.

By introducing the single-ball system in domestic cricket, NZC will have an opportunity to assess how the rule affects batting strategies, bowling plans and match outcomes before making a decision on its continued use in the Ford Trophy.

One of the key questions will be whether an older ball creates a more significant challenge for batters in the closing overs. With the two-ball system, each ball is relatively newer during the latter part of an innings, which can limit the opportunity for reverse swing. A single-ball approach allows the same ball to age throughout the innings, potentially creating different conditions for fast bowlers.

The results of the trial could offer useful insight into how teams manage the balance between batting aggression and bowling control in 50-over cricket.

Will Young Eyes a Historic Ford Trophy Achievement

The opening round will also provide Young with an opportunity to achieve a personal milestone. The 33-year-old scored centuries in the Central Stags' elimination final and grand final last season, helping his team secure the Ford Trophy title.

Young made 105 against the Wellington Firebirds in the elimination final before scoring 157 against Canterbury in the grand final. Central chased Canterbury's 302 for seven to win by six wickets, with Young and Curtis Heaphy, who scored 105, sharing a record second-wicket partnership of 257 runs.

If Young scores another century in the Stags' opening match against Northern Districts at Saxton Oval in Nelson on October 28, he will become the first player in the competition's 55-year history to register three consecutive centuries.

The prospect adds another storyline to the opening round, with the batter looking to continue his strong form while adapting to the revised playing conditions.
