Sir Bobby Charlton’s last surviving brother Tommy has spoken of his heartbreak over the loss of his beloved older sibling, who passed away in October aged 86.
In an emotional interview with Sky News, Tommy Charlton paid tribute to Sir Bobby’s incredible life and achievements, both on and off the pitch.
“He was a wonderful brother,” Tommy said. “He was always there for me, no matter what. He was my idol and my role model.”
Tommy went on to recall his fondest memories of Sir Bobby, including their shared love of football and their close bond as brothers.
“We used to play football together for hours on end,” Tommy said. “We would play in the park, in the street, even in the back garden. We loved the game and we were both very good at it.”
Tommy also spoke of Sir Bobby’s humility and his commitment to giving back to the community.
“He was a very humble man,” Tommy said. “He never let his fame go to his head. He was always willing to help others and he was a great ambassador for football.”
Sir Bobby Charlton is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time. He won two league titles and a European Cup with Manchester United, and he was a key member of the England team that won the World Cup in 1966.
Tommy Charlton said that his brother’s legacy would live on forever.
“He was a true legend,” Tommy said. “He was an inspiration to millions of people around the world. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will never be forgotten.”
In addition to his on-field achievements, Sir Bobby Charlton was also a successful businessman and philanthropist. He founded the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation, which has raised millions of pounds to support people with dementia and other disabilities.
Tommy Charlton said that his brother’s work off the pitch was just as important as his achievements on the field.
“He was a very generous man,” Tommy said. “He always wanted to help others. He knew that he was in a privileged position and he used his platform to make a difference in the world.”
Tommy Charlton concluded his interview by saying that his brother would be “very proud” of the tributes that have been paid to him since his death.
“He was a great man,” Tommy said. “He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.”
