Wimbledon 2022 Live: Novak Djokovic is looking for his fourth consecutive Wimbledon title. Could the top pick win his first Grand Slam this year?

For the first time in four years, Djokovic’s ranking dropped to third or lower in the ATP rankings. He started the year as World No. 1 but his hold on the top began to loosen after he was eliminated from the Australian Open due to his non-vaccination status. He also had to miss subsequent tournaments where he was not allowed. As a result, his ranking points have decreased a lot.
He was knocked out by Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals of the French Open this year and this forced him to drop to No. 3 in the world rankings for the first time since October 2018.
However, despite the rankings, six-time Wimbledon champion World No. 1 Daniel Medvedev and World No. 2 Alexander Zaverev will enter the SW19 as top picks due to unavailability. While Zaverev is recovering from an ankle injury at the French Open, Medvedev is out following a ban on Russian and Belarus players following Russia’s attack on Ukraine. This is the first time Wimbledon has seen the participation of two of the best players in the world. With this, Novak Djokovic is still the favorite to win the title.
- Djokovic has a terrific record on the Grass court Grand Slam with a 79-10 win-loss record in his career.
- He has won six titles at the Grass Court Grand Slam and is now eyeing to equal Pete Sampras’ record of seven Wimbledon titles.
- Djokovic has won the last three titles and if the reigning champion wins the title this year, it will be his fourth consecutive title at the major.
- If he achieves the feat, he will become only the fourth player to win four consecutive Wimbledon titles. The players to have done it previously includes Roger Federer and Bjorn Borg, who have won five consecutive titles each and Pete Sampras, who won four titles.
Most Grand Slam titles
- Rafael Nadal – 22
- Novak Djokovic – 20
- Roger Federer – 20
Having won 20 Grand Slam titles, he is also in the race wth his rivals Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer to achieve most Grand Slam title wins in career. With no imminent threat from Federer at the moment, Djokovic has the opportunity to reduce the gap with Nadal, who now has 22 Grad Slam titles to his name.
